Welcome to the Montreal infringement festival, a grassroots, Do-It-Yourself festival is based on the original Edinburgh Fringe of 1947! If you want to make an impact and protect independent arts from corporate interference, this festival is likely for you!
This year, Montreal infringement festival is moving from June to November to coincide with the third World Fringe Congress, a gathering of Fringe administrators from around the globe! These arts administrators and power-brokers will be in Montreal to discuss the business dynamics surrounding Fringe Festivals, such as trademarking the word “fringe”, which corporate sponsors are the most profitable, “extra fees” to add onto ticket sales, how much money to charge the artists to perform, etc.
In Canada, a CBC analysis recently revealed that out-of-control arts administrators now “make up the 1%” in the arts world – at the expense of the artists producing the work and spectators in attendance. This problem of arts exploitation exists across the world and is only getting worse.
The infringement festival movement aims to challenge this unfair dynamic and put some power back into the hands of artists. Incidentally, artists held all the power at the first Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, 1947, whereas now it is forbidden to do Fringe theatre in Canada without paying hefty fees and agreeing to follow a system based on corporate advertising.
Running from Tuesday, November 15th to Sunday November 20th, the Montreal infringement festival will present activist performances designed to inspire the Fringe administrators – and to demand positive social change in the arts!
Hosted by the people who trademarked and restricted the word “Fringe” in Canada, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, the World Fringe Congress is an opportunity for arts activists to dialogue with arts administrators about important issues that affect artists and communities. The infringement festival challenges corporatization of the Fringe movement and authentic culture through dialogue, advocacy and by hosting independent performances by artists and activists that are often critical in nature. This year we are also hosting the first-ever World Infringement Congress on November 19.

Bienvenue au festival Infringement de Montréal, un festival pour le peuple par le peuple inspiré du Fringe d’Édimbourg de 1947. Si vous voulez avoir de l’impact et protéger les arts indépendants contre l’ingérence, ce festival est probablement pour vous !
Cette année, le festival Infringement de Montréal a été transféré de juin à novembre afin de coïncider avec le troisième congrès mondial du Fringe, une réunion de ses administrateurs mondiaux.
Administrateurs des arts et négociateurs seront à Montréal pour discuter sur les dynamiques d’affaires des festivals Fringe, comme déposer le nom « fringe » en tant marque de fabrique, dont profiteront le plus les commanditaires, les « frais supplémentaires » à ajouter aux billets de vente, combien d’argent les artistes auront à débourser pour jouer, etc.
Au Canada, une analyse de la CBC a récemment révélé que 1 % du monde artistique est composé d’administrateurs des arts – au détriment des artistes qui produisent des oeuvres, et leurs spectateurs. Ce problème d’exploitation des arts existe autour du monde et empire de plus en plus.
Le festival Infringement est un mouvement qui vise à braver cette dynamique injuste et remettre le pouvoir entre les mains des artistes. À propos, les artistes tenaient tout le pouvoir lors du premier Fringe d’Édimbourg, en 1947 ; par contre, maintenant il est interdit de faire du théâtre « fringe » au Canada sans payer de lourds frais et suivre un mandat basé sur la publicité des corporations.
Allant du mardi 15 novembre au dimanche 20 novembre, le festival Infringement de Montréal présentera des spectacles montés pour inspirer les administrateurs du Fringe et leur demander un changement social positif sur la scène des arts !
Animé par des gens qui ont déposé et restreint le mot « Fringe » au Canada, l’Association canadienne des festivals Fringe, le Congrès mondial du Fringe est une opportunité pour les artistes engagés de dialoguer avec les administrateurs des arts sur les sujets brûlants qui touchent la communauté artistique. Le festival Infringement brave le mouvement d’entreprise du Fringe et défend la culture authentique à travers le dialogue, la plaidoirie et en animant divers spectacles indépendants, de nature critique, faits par des artistes engagés. Cette année, nous accueille également le tout premier Congrès mondial de l’infringement le 19 Novembre.
